I think of Dior Lip Polish as a big brother of Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm, one of my favorite lip products ever — I even took pictures of them together! Lip Polish is a lip primer and a lip polish that comes in universal sheer baby pink color (exactly the same pink that Lip Glow comes in). However, while Lip Glow works as a balm and a moisturizer, Lip Polish is more like an everyday hydrating lip gloss.
Lip Polish is expensive — $33, and honestly, I am not sure if such high price is justified. I am a big fan of Dior products and almost always think they are worth every penny I pay for them but not in this case. Let me tell you why.
The tube is very pretty. It’s made of clear plastic with Dior logo and has a silver cap. A spin-on applicator is nice too: not too big, not too small. Better than the one for Dior Addict Fluid Stick. The description on Sephora calls this applicator “revolutionary” – well, I think it’s a bit of exaggeration. However, this applicator does do its job right: it picks up the right amount of product and rolls it evenly on the lips.
Lip Polish is advertised by Dior as a lip primer and a lip polish. I have no idea what a lip polish is and I don’t see how you can use this product as a lip primer. After using Lip Polish for a few months, I feel that “lip polish” must be a fancy synonym for a lip gloss and that primer part of Lip Polish is non-existent.
I do not see how Lip Polish can serve as a lip primer because lip primer is supposed to be completely translucent, moisturizing and delicate balm/cream. It should be practically invisible on my lips in order to allow the actual lipstick to play its part. Lip Polish just doesn’t work for that purpose: it’s way too thick and glossy. In other words, if we keep using the manicure terminology, using Lip Polish as a lip primer is the same as using top coat under your actual nail polish. I like using Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment as my lip primer – it is perfect.
Lip Polish is moderately thick, smooth and clear lip gloss with a tint of universal pink that adapts to your lips color. It smells and tastes good. It doesn’t have any shimmer or glitter and does make your lips look sort of polished (although I feel that every other lip gloss does the same). At the same time it moisturizes them due to hyaluronic acid-based microspheres, which apparently impart and retain moisture in the skin (I googled it!). I don’t even try to imagine what those microspheres look like under a microscope but I can testify that Lip Polish does indeed have a hydrating effect. I wear Lip Polish either alone (it’s a good choice for low-key makeup) or over my favorite Dior Lip Glow balm. Those two work perfectly with each other – my lips are moisturized, moderately shiny and have a nice natural pink tint. In other words, as I said Lip Glow is a nice lip gloss but I can’t say it’s something extraordinary. For example, I compare it with Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss (cost me $20) and don’t see how Crystal is by any means worse than Lip Polish.
Staying power of Lip Polish is not great. It lasts for about 30-40 minutes. After that I have to re-apply. Lip Polish is not sticky which is nice. It feels smooth and rather natural. I don’t feel like I am wearing some type of glossy glue on my lips.
So, here is my conclusion: while Lip Polish is a good quality product, it’s still just a lip gloss. There are dozens of those on the lip market and a lot of them are cheaper and are as good or better than Lip Polish. If you are looking for a low-key moisturizing lip gloss with a bit of color (or no color at all) and have some extra money to spend, Lip Polish would be a good choice. However, if you’d like to save I’d recommend the following glosses (I tried them all):
Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss — $19; translucent;
Fresh Sugar Shine Lip Treatment — $18.50; comes in four colors, provides amazing hydration;
tarte LipSurgence Lip Gloss — $19, comes in 10 colors; smell is not great but the product is moisturizing and has good staying power; I am excited to try their new LipSurgence Skintuitive Lip Gloss.
L’Occitane Rose 4 Reines and Peony lip glosses – I bought these a while ago, as far as I know L’Occitane discontinued them but you can find some on eBay, they are awesome. Rose 4 Reines is a perfume/lip gloss duo and Peony is a lip gloss that adapts its color to your lips when applied.
Dior Addict Gloss — $29.50; comes in 18 colors and 4-5 of them are very light and would be great as a moisturizing, barely visible lip gloss.
